A look back at his best songs
We suggest a review of the most famous and essential songs to get to know Avicii, the Swedish DJ who composed hits that have been the soundtrack of our days.
Tim Bergling, known worldwide by his pseudonym Avicii, was found dead in his room on April 20, 2018. Despite this tragic end, we thought the best way to remember him is by listening to his music, with which he set the soundtrack to our days (and especially, to our nights). So, connect your sound tower and turn up the volume!
Hey Brother
Perhaps one of the most legendary songs by the Swedish DJ. It is included in his debut album “True” and we started hearing it in 2013, but in reality it has never stopped playing on the radio stations.
The style of this song, which mixes progressive house, dance pop, folk, and bluegrass, combines with lyrics and a video that evoke nostalgia for lost hope and (perhaps) regained hope.
In fact, the video, which was nominated at the MTV Video Music Awards 2014 in the Best Video with a Social Message category, tells the story of a boy who remembers his childhood with his brother, who died in the war. It intersperses images of an idyllic childhood with those of the Vietnam War. On YouTube, it has nearly 175 million views.
Levels
Another of Avicii’s most famous tracks and part of our global soundtrack.
The Swedish producer released it in 2011 and it quickly became one of his biggest hits. It was number one in Sweden, Norway, and Hungary and in many other countries it was among the ten most listened to songs of the year.
In the music video, which has over 470 million views on YouTube, the story is about a very boring office worker who, “possessed” by Avicii’s music, begins to let loose, dance, move rhythmically... And like an unstoppable virus, the music spreads quickly among those nearby, who in turn decide to abandon pretense and join in a dance that can never stop.
Waiting for Love
This song was made and produced by Avicii in 2015 in collaboration (though not officially confirmed) with producer Martin Garrix. The music video has over 700 million views and tells the moving adventures of an elderly man who decides to reunite with his wife after she dies at the beginning of the video. On a scooter, the protagonist overcomes all kinds of obstacles that lead him to the arms of his wife, who waits for him in a small village (perhaps heaven?).
Wake me up
Another song made by the DJ and released in 2013. On this occasion, Avicii collaborated with the American R&B singer Aloe Blacc and the guitarist from Incubus, Mike Einziger, who took part on acoustic guitar and in composition.
The video — which reaches 1.9 billion views on YouTube — shows two sisters who have the Avicii symbol ( ◢◤ ) tattooed on their bodies and feel displaced and unaccepted in the village where they live.
The older sister heads to the city and there meets other people also marked with the symbol ◢◤. They all go to a party where Avicii himself is on stage alongside singer Aloe Blacc. After this experience, it seems the older sister decides they have found a happy place to live, so she gathers her sister to move to the city and leave behind the village where they are not loved.
Nights
“Live the life you will want to remember”: this is the message of another of Avicii’s most listened to songs, released in 2014 and for which he worked with other artists though these were not officially confirmed.
In this case, the Swedish DJ uses the blend of progressive house and folk rock so characteristic of his compositions, which made him world-famous, and sends a message of celebration of life.
There are many more…
For those who want more, there are many more songs to enjoy from this composer of electronic music, who left memorable songs like “The Days” or “You make me”... You can keep searching for your favorite.
