Work documents, family videos, travel photos, or special memories that are only kept digitally... More and more aspects of our lives are stored on our devices, but we almost never consider the consequences of losing them due to theft, accident, or technical malfunction.
On the occasion on the occasion of World Backup Day, celebrated today, March 31, the Spanish consumer technology brand SPC recommends 6 essential practices to keep users’ “digital life” protected, while reminding us of the importance of routine backups:
1. The “3-2-1 rule.” This is one of the main practices when it comes to protecting our important data and documents. According to this method, backup copies of a file should be created and stored on three different types of media (for example, inside the device, on an external physical storage, and in the cloud). The “3-2-1 rule” requires at least three copies of the data; two of them stored on two physical storage formats, and at least one backup copy must be stored in the cloud.
2. Creating a backup cloud security. This habit provides access to content from any device. There are free alternatives to paid file storage. Services like Google Drive, which offers 15 GB of free storage for Gmail, Google Docs, and Google Photos, are often overlooked by users. To preserve memories and free up space, it can be very useful to periodically review stored files and transfer the most crucial ones from the phone’s memory to cloud storage. This way, data will be safe even if the main device is lost or broken.
3. Devices with expandable memory via micro-SD card can also help store data and documents on removable memory that can be read on another device if necessary. For example, there are tablets with different internal storage configurations which allow you to expand their memory via microSD card, as well as conveniently back up data to an additional card and safeguard the information.
4. Take advantage of the automatic backup features of the operating system or specialized apps when creating backups of your smartphone. The Android operating system allows you to enable automatic backup of content, data, and phone settings. You just need to activate this option in the smartphone settings menu so the phone takes care of keeping your data safe. Also, for photos, the app Google Photo automatically backs up photos to the cloud.
5. Another option is to connect the smartphone to the computer and transfer important files or a full backup of the mobile phone to your PC. With this method, the user can periodically complement the cloud backup of documents, images, or videos on the PC’s hard drive.
6. It is also essential to install antivirus software and keep it always updated. This tool not only protects against viruses and malware, but also detects suspicious behavior that could jeopardize your privacy. This allows you to strengthen device security and prevent data leaks or unauthorized access to personal information, especially important if you manage confidential content on your mobile device.
Keeping your “digital life” secure doesn’t have to be difficult or expensive. With a series of good habits, as SPC reminds us, you can protect all your memories forever.
