Tips to save on your electricity bill in summer and provide the right air conditioning for your smart home without complex installation work

The smart devices that make up a smart home will become the perfect ally during these summer months: without renovations or large expenses, you can have a well-conditioned home, saving energy and reducing your bill at the end of the month.

SPC’s fans, humidifiers, and smart bulbs are examples of how you can have a comfortable environment this summer and control your home’s climate from the palm of your hand.

As we enter May, we can already anticipate what awaits us in the summer on the horizon. According to the State Meteorological Agency, this summer is expected to be very hot in various parts of the country, as the first four months of 2024 have been among the warmest in history.

To achieve a cool and pleasant home to counteract these high outdoor temperatures, SPC, the Spanish consumer electronics and smart device brand, explains how IoT products can help us this season.

With a small investment, you can have your home well air-conditioned in a simple way and without installation work. Fans, humidifiers, and smart bulbs are some examples of devices you can control from your smartphone wherever you are to provide your home with the most comfortable climate while saving energy and money.

These products can be managed remotely, so we can turn them on on the way home to find a pleasant environment upon arrival or turn them off when we are away. Likewise, they allow us to change preset schedules and other settings according to the needs of each moment and each room in the home. For example, if we have programmed our IoT device to activate at the time we usually arrive home in the afternoon, but one day we have an unexpected plan and will be late, we can change the activation time from the phone through the device management app. Small actions like this, repeated throughout the summer, translate into significant energy and money savings in our homes.

Smart fans cool your home while caring for your health, your wallet, and the planet

Besides all the advantages offered by IoT products, specifically the smart fans provide many other benefits. They offer a more natural way to cool the environment than air conditioning. They dissipate the hot air around instead of blowing cold air and drying out the environment, which can cause dryness in the respiratory tract, sore throats, or colds. Additionally, they are a much more sustainable and environmentally friendly alternative since they do not require refrigerant gases for operation, which can harm the ozone layer.

Their mobile control system means we can program their automatic on and off from our smartphone or tablet, allowing us to set them to activate during the hours we need, whether during the day or sleep hours, without having to remember to turn them off. This way, we ensure they are not left on unnecessarily. Additionally, thanks to remote management capability, the smart fan can turn on when electricity consumption is cheaper and turn off when the rate is about to change, helping us save money.

Optimal humidity levels provide a more pleasant thermal sensation

Smart humidifiers, small, discreet, and space-saving, provide the necessary humidity (between 40% and 60%) to counteract the dryness of the air in drier climates, as well as that generated by other climate control electronic devices. This will provide a lower thermal sensation in the room where the device is placed. We can program or activate/deactivate them remotely at a specific time so the house has a pleasant temperature and humidity, making our arrival more satisfying and comfortable.

Use lighting with white and bluish tones to prevent heat

Not only larger devices help cool and maintain a comfortable environment; smart bulbs will become our allies this summer and also help create a cool and comfortable atmosphere. If you select cool colors to light your home, in white and bluish tones, you will create a cooler thermal sensation than if your home lighting is in warm and yellowish tones.

“Old-fashioned” tricks

Although technology allows us to lower the temperature of our home to be comfortable in summer without paying extra or doing major installation work, we should not forget traditional tricks we have always used at home. If we have a garden or plants in our yard or windows, we can water them late in the day. This way, our flowers will absorb the water better and release a coolness that can enter through the windows and cool the rooms. Another common and simple trick is to try to cook or iron clothes during the coolest hours of the day or when we are going out, to avoid generating more heat that spreads to other rooms, causing them to warm up and forcing us to increase the power of our climate control systems. Finally, we must not forget the importance of using cool fabrics, both in our clothing and home textiles, such as linen or cotton, as they absorb moisture and are very breathable and lightweight.

These simple tricks not only allow us to enjoy these months more comfortably but also contribute to energy savings and environmental care.
