Black Panther: Wakanda Forever breaks a double Marvel record

It had been a while since we last came here with new releases from the Marvel saga, so we were eager to revisit its exciting universe. This post is especially emotional because we are going to learn some interesting aspects of the second Black Panther movie: Wakanda Forever. As most of you probably already know, this work is filled with emotion due to the passing of the lead actor who embodied and brought this hero to life: Chadwick Boseman, who died of cancer two years ago.

On the weekend of its release, last November 11, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever was a true box office success. Just in the United States and Canada, the film set a November record with a gross of 330 million dollars. But this is not the only record broken by this production; we will see another one below.

In Spain, we cannot talk about such astronomical figures, but we can say that half of the box office revenue during its opening weekend was earned by the Marvel feature film, totaling 2.8 million euros.

This sequel to the first Black Panther movie resolves a big question: what happens in this story if its main protagonist, T’Challa, played by the late Chadwick Boseman in 2020, is no longer present. This alone attracted 180 million dollars to theaters in the United States, making this film the highest-grossing November opening in American history, even surpassing the 2013 sequel of The Hunger Games, which earned 158.1 million in its first weekend.

Outside the U.S. market, the gross for Wakanda Forever exceeds 150 million dollars, making it the highest-grossing Hollywood opening.

To offer a critique, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever falls short compared to what the original film achieved at its release. That film debuted in theaters with a whopping 202 million. It also has not managed to surpass, though narrowly, the opening of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness as the best opening of the year. At this point, what we really should ask you is whether Wakanda Forever will manage to catch up to Top Gun: Maverick and take the title of the highest-grossing film of 2022 (as of the date this post was written).

CURIOSITIES ABOUT WAKANDA FOREVER AND ITS SECOND RECORD

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is the longest film in the Marvel Universe. With this, this giant of the film industry makes it clear that the production is not only the official conclusion of phase four but also a major event.

Until the arrival of this second part of Black Panther, the longest film in the franchise—excluding the Avengers sub-franchise—was Eternals, with a runtime of two hours and 36 minutes, so this one surpasses it by just 5 minutes (2 hours and 41 minutes).

The film features pre-Hispanic Mayan characters. For this, Marvel hired real Mexican Mayan speakers who provided guidance to the production team.
