The viral challenge from the latest Star Wars movie, The Last Jedi
#Kylorenchallenge has become the first viral challenge of the year.
With the #Kylorenchallenge, it all started when the American artist and singer John Mayer posted on his Instagram on the last day of 2017 (December 31) a photo in which he imitated the outfit of the character Kylo Ren from the Star Wars saga in one of the scenes from the movie "The Last Jedi," which premiered with great fanfare in the last month of last year.
In it, the new villain of the intergalactic saga Kylo Ren, played by the 34-year-old Californian actor Adam Driver, appears wearing strange black pants with an extremely long rise, pulled up well above the waist, covering his navel and showing his pectorals.
The photo that started the viral challenge, the hashtag #Kylorenchallenge left no doubt: John Mayer, who has 2.8 million followers on the social network, was calling for more people to join the challenge of pulling their pants up as high as possible and showing off their bare-chested pectorals, in the style of "Kylo Ren".
Thus a new #challenge was created on social media, just as has happened on previous occasions, when a celebrity has given free rein to the creativity of internet users with invitations to join the challenge or, in other cases, when it has been these same users who have proposed to artists and personalities from the world of entertainment, politics, or sports to dare to take on some challenge, like the already famous #icebucketchallenge.
It didn't take long for thousands of internet users to respond to the provocation of the singer of songs like Gravity and author of the album "The Search for Everything" and share on social media their photos showing how high their pants could go and the strength of their pectorals.
#kylorenchallenge, the story beyond the challenge
From there, the challenge was underway: thousands of interpretations and comments appeared on social media discussing the groundbreaking style sported by the new Star Wars antihero, destined to be Darth Vader's successor and who seems to have gained momentum in these latest saga installments after “Episode VII - The Force Awakens,” and the spin-off “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story” (in which he actually does not appear).
The #kylorenchallenge soon became an excuse for saga fans to parody the character Kylo Ren, talk about, and comment on their critiques of the latest movie.
It also served to discuss the story development that pits jedis - defenders of the Republic - against the Sith, who fight for the Empire in an eternal battle between good and evil. across many planets and worlds over thousands of years.
These are forces that clash both in the famous saga and on social media; in fact, the challenge even reached Twitter.
With or without a lightsaber, the #kylorenchallenge is still making waves; after all, the Star Wars fashion is almost an institution in itself and there are characters, like Princess Amidala or Princess Leia, who have created an entire unique style with their outfits and thousands of loyal followers who, every year, dress up imitating their dresses, hairstyles, and makeup.
Who knows which new little outfit will triumph on social media in the next installment of the saga, which will premiere in 2019?
