Wednesday returns to the supernatural outcast boarding school on Netflix

Wednesday, Tim Burton’s Addams Family spinoff, becomes the second most-watched series in Netflix history with over one billion hours viewed in a month. It is the third series to reach this milestone, alongside Squid Game and Season 4 of Stranger Things (which remains in first place with 1.352 billion hours viewed). Additionally, it holds the record for the best debut for a Netflix series.

Want more facts? Here they are. Everything we’ve mentioned above means it is the third most-watched English-language series of all time on the platform. If we consider shows in languages other than English, it drops to fifth place, which is still an incredible achievement. And all these figures come without knowing if it has reached its most ambitious goal. It doesn’t seem like the series’ growing success is about to decline, so we don’t know exactly how far all the records “Wednesday” can break will go.

In its first season, Tim Burton directed 8 episodes following Wednesday, played by Jenna Ortega, at Nevermore Academy, a boarding school for marginalized supernatural characters. In this first season, Wednesday begins adapting to her new school while a mysterious murder that affected her parents 30 years ago is being solved. Therefore, although the new series focuses on the story of the Addams family daughter, her parents, Morticia and Gomez Addams, continue to be present in the fictional story as an integral part of the murder plot.

At the end of the first season, it is hinted that there are still more secrets to uncover and that our protagonist will likely investigate her new stalker in another season.

Tim Burton is the big question mark for the second season

If the mystery is resolved and Tim Burton returns as director for the second season of Wednesday, it will be the first time since 1992’s Batman Returns that he has directed a sequel to one of his projects.

The estimated release date for this second season is, at the earliest, November 2023; but there is no certainty it might even be delayed. What is expected is the return of almost the entire cast from the first season, which would undoubtedly include Catherine Zeta-Jones, Luis Guzmán, Isaac Ordóñez, and Fred Armisen, who play Morticia, Gomez, Pugsley, and Fester Addams, respectively.
