There is practically no one left in the world who doesn’t know Rosalía. And when we say “no one in the world,” it’s not far from the truth, as studies show that 94% of the Spanish population knows who she is. On top of that, she is the only Spanish artist to have performed solo on one of the most renowned North American late-night shows, 'Saturday Night Live,' which, by the way, she has appeared on twice. Returning to the topic at hand, this hugely popular Spanish singer, born in Catalonia, has recently released her third album: Motomami.
After her two previous works, Los ángeles and El mal querer, released in 2017 and 2018 respectively, Rosalía presents her third album, Motomami, in 2022. It was November 2021 when the artist, originally from San Esteban de Sasroviras (Barcelona), announced this new album on social media.
Throughout the last months of 2021 and early 2022, Rosalía has been revealing little by little the secrets hidden in her album. Up to the time of writing this post, there have been 4 singles released.
The first one
The first single might have been the most talked about, possibly due to the collaboration with the internationally recognized The Weeknd. It is a bachata duet called La fama.
The second one
After announcing the first single, Rosalía released Saoko, which clearly shows inspiration from Wisin and Daddy Yankee, starting with the song’s title. In 2004, the two artists released Saoco, and just like Rosalía’s song, you can hear a chorus saying “Saoco, papi, Saoco.”
As a curiosity, this term, unknown to most of us until now but very popular in Latin America, originates from Africa and means “rhythm, music, joy, and good movement.”
The third one
Rosalía again chose the digital environment to present the preview of her third single in mid-February. This time it was Chicken Teriyaki. This reggaeton track reached two million views on YouTube in less than 24 hours. Today, the video has over 27.5 million views.
As seen in the music video for this third single, it is a song with choreography designed to become a viral phenomenon on social media.
And the fourth time’s the charm
The latest single the Catalan artist has shared is Hentai. We’ll skip mentioning where she chose to share these musical seconds again with her followers because that would be redundant. But what we can tell you is that this preview sparked comments, criticism, and even memes on social media. Once the full song was revealed, it was clear that the final version could be considered one of the most complex, musically speaking.
What Rosalía means in numbers and other curiosities
We didn’t want to miss the opportunity to review the numbers Rosalía is capable of moving, and this time we’re not talking about money.
For example, the 15-second Instagram post announcing her new album reached nearly 1.5 million likes in 12 hours, including likes from some well-known artists both inside and outside our borders.
We can continue to surprise you by telling you that when the singer released her second album in 2018, El mal querer, the term “Rosalía” became one of the most searched names on the Internet. This contrasts with the experience the Catalan artist had 10 years earlier when she received 4 “no” votes from the jury of the talent show Tú sí que vales.
Still in 2018, we see that at that time there were no Internet searches for the term “Malamente.” We have observed something similar this year with the term “Motomami,” which she has used not only to name her third album but also her company. There were no Google searches for this new word until November 2, 2021.
Undoubtedly, 2018 was her breakthrough year; she went from being known by a mere 14% to ending the year with 81% recognition among young audiences.
And there’s more… In the last year, the total number of views on her YouTube videos has reached 1.27 billion—yes, you read that right! With a B for billion! Leading the pack is the video for Con altura, which also held the top spot for most viewed videos in Spain in 2019 with 1.14 billion views.
