May 15 - International Day of Families Families united beyond distance: how technology helps care for the elderly

In an increasingly digital world, technology not only transforms how we work or entertain ourselves, but it can also build bridges between generations. On the occasion of International Family Day, celebrated on May 15, SPC, the Spanish consumer electronics brand, highlights the essential role of the family as a pillar of care and support for the elderly, and how technology can become a key tool to care for those we love most.

According to the “Study on the use of technology among our seniors” by SPC, 62% of Spaniards believe that difficulties with mobile phones negatively affect the social integration of seniors. The digital divide is not only a technological challenge but also deeply impacts their quality of life, as only 12% of seniors manage to use their mobile phones without help.

The reality of our seniors regarding technology: present, but not always accessible

The data from the consumer electronics brand’s study reveal a dual reality since, although more than 90% of people over 70 have access to some type of technological device, 88% need help with basic mobile phone tasks such as saving a contact, increasing the volume, or sending a message. This dependence not only limits their communication ability or access to resources but can also cause frustration, insecurity, and isolation. The digital divide remains a very present reality and directly affects the emotional well-being of our seniors.

SPC Care: caring for those who cared for us, even from a distance

In response to this reality, SPC has developed SPC Care, an innovative application that allows family members and caregivers to remotely manage the basic mobile phones of their elderly relatives, optimizing their user experience, increasing their safety, and reducing the barriers that separate them from technology.

With this app, caring no longer requires physical presence; it is only necessary for a family member or close person to install the application on their smartphone to have control of the senior’s phone on their own device and remotely manage all the settings of their mobile: adjust call volume, change the font size on the screen, activate or deactivate certain functions...

Also, once the application is linked to the senior’s phone, family members will receive notifications of missed calls, new messages, and alerts in case of prolonged inactivity of the senior’s phone; as well as warnings for low battery or activation of the SOS button on the senior phone. Additionally, the app also offers the option to know the GPS location of our elderly relative and to protect them against SPAM, as it allows remote management of their contact list, blacklist of calls and messages, and marking SMS as read and calls as seen, avoiding interactions with potentially fraudulent contacts. Finally, it also allows creating reminders for medical appointments and medication schedules.

This remote assistance application is embodied in SPC POLARIS, the first mobile phone for seniors integrated with SPC Care and fully configurable remotely from a smartphone. SPC POLARIS is an ergonomic clamshell device with a large screen, visible keys, accessible charging base, SOS button, and hearing aid compatibility, designed for those who grew up far from smartphones but do not want to be left out.

“On this International Family Day, at SPC we want to remind that technology can also be an act of love. A bridge between sons and daughters who cannot be with their parents every day, between grandchildren who want to make sure their grandparents are well, between people who, despite the distance, never stop caring. SPC Care is an example of how technology connects and can—and should—adapt to people, not the other way around,” says Verónica Catediano, PR Manager of SPC.
