42% of Spaniards will reduce their use of their technological devices this summer

The Spanish consumer electronics brand SPC has analyzed how we use electronic devices in summer and which are the most used

The mobile phone is, by far, the essential device to enjoy summer holidays, followed by headphones and the tablet

The study reveals that women try to reduce their technology use in summer 5% more often than men

We live surrounded by electronic devices. Moreover, in recent months, we have made great use of them given the exceptional situation we have had to live through. The hours of confinement forced us to find other ways to stay in touch with people, to exercise through applications, to listen to music with a device instead of live, and to see the faces of our loved ones through the screens of our mobile phones

Now that summer is approaching, Spaniards face this season eager to disconnect in order to connect with what truly matters. The ‘First X-ray of the Spanish Smart led by the Spanish consumer electronics brand SPC, reveals that 42.1% of Spaniards between 18 and 75 years old reduce their use of electronic devices in summer to devote more time to themselves, to the people they care about most, or to enjoy their favorite activities.

Regarding this last figure, the report also reveals that women try to reduce their use of electronic devices more, standing at 44.5% compared to men who reduce it by 39.6%.

The mobile phone, the gadget indispensable during summer holidays

The arrival of holidays, days of rest, and the lack of work responsibilities make us consider which devices we want to accompany us during this summer period. Through this study, we learn that, among all the variety of electronic devices we currently have, the mobile phone is the device considered indispensable during summer holidays, being so for 8 out of 10 Spaniards (80.10%).

Following this, but at a considerable distance, are headphones, which are essential for 27.7% of the population, the tablet for 22.7%, or the ebook reader, which cannot be missing for 21.9%. These four devices are preferred by people who have had much contact with technology and for whom it is already part of their daily life.

On the opposite side, the radio (11.5%), the smart wristband (9.6%), the smartwatch (9.4%), speakers (8.3%), and the conventional mobile phone (7.2%) are the electronic devices considered least necessary in daily summer holiday life.

It is important to highlight that only 1 in 20 Spaniards (5.52%) says they are able to enjoy their summer holidays without any of the above devices.

This is how Spaniards live our techie summer: same electronic devices, but less usage time

With summer and the change of habits, some Spaniards see their time of use of electronic devices modified. According to the SPC study, there is an increase in the need to disconnect during this period, as 42.1% say they reduce device use during this season compared to 33.2% who, on the contrary, increase their use, or 24.7% who say they maintain it compared to the rest of the year.

On the other hand, most Spaniards use the same devices as during the rest of the year, although a significant 30.5% declare changing devices during their summer holidays (for example, more use of the ebook reader instead of the mobile) as their habits and needs vary. These users, in turn, also alter their frequency of use habits, since only 4.7% of Spaniards who turn to new devices in summer maintain the time they spend with them.

It can be concluded that, although a significant part of the Spaniards surveyed will take advantage of the extra leisure hours to escape the overconnection to which we are subjected the rest of the year, for most Spaniards technology has been a great help in the last year to stay connected with our loved ones and to enjoy many of the daily activities we were accustomed to.
