Discover which jobs are most in demand in the era of remote work
There is no doubt at this point that one of the great discoveries of the past year has been remote work. Companies, people, services, businesses… the entire job market has had to reinvent itself to adapt, at a speed never seen before, to current circumstances. The most positive consequence of this change to which the professional world has been subjected is the rise of certain jobs. If you are looking for a new job, what we have to tell you will surely interest you.
In this regard, several studies have analyzed over the past months which jobs have experienced the greatest growth as a direct result of the changes that COVID-19 has brought to our society. For this occasion, we have focused on the report “Jobs on the Rise” recently published by the professional social network LinkedIn.
After analyzing the most sought-after jobs throughout 2020, this social network has published a list of the top 15 categories that, according to them, will lead the job market in 2021:
1.- Education:
If there is one sector that had to hasten digitalization at full speed throughout 2020, it was precisely this one. With all schools and educational centers closed during the last quarter of the 2019/2020 school year, in-person education became overnight distance education 100%. As a result, educational positions with digital skills increased by 92% in 2020, with 61% of hires being women.
2.- Specialized medical professionals:
Our country has been, and still is, severely affected by COVID-19. It is no surprise then that one of the most sought-after profiles has been specialized medical professionals. Throughout 2020, there was a 55% increase in hiring for these profiles, of which 70% were women with an average age of 27 years. Most correspond to nursing positions.
3.- Medical support staff:
The increase in this type of professional seems to be a direct consequence of the previous point, as with the rise in hiring specialized medical professionals, other healthcare support jobs have also grown, such as laboratory technical assistants, so essential for advancing the study and development of COVID-19 vaccines.

4.- Online commerce:
Another logical consequence that the pandemic and the closure of physical stores during lockdown months brought us was the rise of online shopping. According to the financial company JP Morgan, 47% of Spaniards have yet to make their first purchase online. Given this promising future for online commerce in our country, some of the main shopping websites have added thousands of workers to strengthen their distribution services. Total hiring for these types of jobs grew by 70% in 2019 and 2020.
5.- Customer service:
Due to lockdowns and restrictions established during the hardest months of the pandemic, many businesses were forced to increase efforts and resources in public service. This has caused a 64% increase in these types of positions.
6.- Real estate sector:
Once again due to mobility restrictions, lockdowns, etc., many people changed their residence from cities to outskirts and peripheral areas in search of a longed-for better quality of life. In this regard, the residential real estate stock increased by 49% in 2020.

7.- Experts in digital marketing:
In 2020, there was a 61% increase in hiring related to this field. With the shift to digital business, profiles of specialists in digital marketing and social networks have been key to helping many businesses that previously operated only physically to make this transition and adaptation.
8.- Business:
In this level of “business,” the highest-ranking positions are included, such as business development consultants, corporate strategy directors… During last year, this job category grew by 56%, with the average age at 36 years, the highest among the 15 categories.
9.- Technology:
This type of job includes roles such as web developer, back-end developer, or cloud systems architect, among others. A notable fact in the technology sector is that positions in video game design and development are two of the vacancies most often filled.
10.- Retail sales:
The best proof we can use to highlight this professional profile as one of the most hired is the 41% increase in positions in this sector, such as cashiers or stock clerks. We all remember how in the spring of 2020 supermarkets or hardware stores became one of our main lifelines to be able to leave home.

The list compiled by LinkedIn is completed with self-employed workers specialized in digital content, mental health professionals, specialized engineers, personal and professional mentors; and specialists in data science and artificial intelligence.
