The PTA and the major companies in Málaga

Do you know the technology park of Andalusia?

Now the large companies are located in Málaga due to its promising technology park

The Technology Park of Andalusia has led to the large companies settling in Málaga. This is the case of companies such as Telefónica, IMB, PRISA, Vocento, Alcatel, Nokia, ONO, the University of Málaga, or Unicaja among others. With this park, Málaga aims to become the European Silicon Valley.

The Technology Park of Andalusia

The PTA (Technology Park of Andalusia) was founded in 1992 as one of the great promises of innovation for the Andalusian community. Little by little it has become, along with tourism, one of the main economic engines of the province of Málaga.

The Technology Park of Andalusia contributes between 6.05 percent and 8.65 percent of the GDP (Gross Domestic Product) of the province. Furthermore, it is responsible for the employment of between 7.05 percent and 10.05 percent of the people of Málaga.

A total of 16,774 employees work in its facilities, spread across large multinational companies that coexist harmoniously with small and medium-sized enterprises dedicated to innovation and the University of Málaga itself. The companies located in this technology park focus on innovation, are respectful of the environment, offer advanced services, and are oriented towards research and development.

The location of the park is no accident; it is situated in the Campanillas district and its connection to the main points of interest is very good. It is 13 km from the center of Málaga, 6 km from Málaga-Costa del Sol airport, and 7 km from the Teatinos University Campus.

For the design of the park, the formula followed in Silicon Valley in California was chosen. For this reason, the presidents of companies in the telecommunications and information technology sectors are supporting a new initiative to turn the PTA into the new European Silicon Valley.

The club formed by these businessmen takes its name from a combination of two terms, one from the Generation of '27 and the other from Silicon Valley itself; in this way, they have decided to name themselves Málaga Valley-27.

Companies that make it up

The PTA is divided into several sectors made up of different companies based on Electronics, Information, Computing, and Telecommunications. This is the majority sector in the entire park as it gathers 32.27 percent of all companies. Employment in this area is 60.14 percent and its turnover in 2015 was 48.22 percent of the total obtained by all companies.

Another sector operating in the park is Engineering, Consulting, and Advisory, whose workers represent 9 percent of the total. In the Services, Training, and Biotechnology sector, 3 percent respectively.

The Industrial sector represents 8 percent of the total employment in the park. On the other hand, Medicine, Health, energy, and the environment are made up of 9 percent of the workers.

The key to its success

The key to its success has been the ability to attract large companies that have decided to settle in Málaga. Besides companies with high growth potential: ITRA, Ebury, or The Workshop, it has been the launching platform for innovative companies in the local field. But its innovation will continue to advance in the coming years. As Felipe Romera, general director of the park, assures: “The PTA is immersed in a third wave of innovation that will catapult it forward. This new phase is marked by disruptive technologies such as cybersecurity, the connected car, artificial intelligence, ‘big data’, or ‘fintech’. Its protagonists are, on one hand, companies like those already mentioned, which are startups of international origin and global vocation that have already passed the initial phase and choose the PTA to expand; and on the other, classic companies of the technopolis that continue to bring good news, such as Dekra (formerly AT4 Wireless), Premo, or Accenture.”
