What is WeTransfer
WeTransfer is a system that allows transferring large files from one person to another through the generation of a link that you can send via email or any messaging application.
Its main advantage is that it is free and does not require any kind of registration either for the person sending the files or for the one receiving them, which saves a significant amount of time, especially regarding entering data and creating accounts and passwords that are easy to forget.
The files you want to send are stored in WeTransfer’s cloud so the recipient can download them. These files only last a few days in the cloud; after that period, they disappear without leaving any trace. If the recipient has not downloaded them yet, they will not be able to do so until you start the process again from the beginning.
The operation is very simple; WeTransfer acts as an intermediary between you and your recipient. The person who will receive the files only needs to download them by pressing a button.
Another advantage it offers is that, unlike email services, it has great capacity and you can send unlimited files up to 2GB that the recipient can download to their computer.
It has two versions: a free one where you can send unlimited files with a maximum weight of 2GB and where the file duration is predetermined, and a paid one that allows you to send files up to 20GB. This Plus version also includes a private storage area of 100GB where you can save everything you need and the option to modify the recipient’s download time. The price of this service is 120 euros per year.
How to send files
If you have decided to try this service, you have two options to do so: through your computer’s browser or through its mobile app. For the latter, you must download the app and start sharing files. It is not necessary for the recipient to have it installed on their phone. The operation is the same on both Web and app, simple and intuitive.
The first thing you must do is enter the WeTransfer page from your computer. At this moment, you will see two options: the first shows the services included in the free mode. The other, the WeTransfer Plus service. At this point, you should choose the option that best suits your needs.
Once you have accessed, you will find a dialog box located at the bottom left of your screen. In this, you must configure the details of the shipment you are going to make. You should start filling in the requested fields.
To add files, you will see a button with the + symbol. After clicking it, your computer’s file explorer will open. Now you must go to the folder where the file you want to send is and select it. Remember that in the free version you have a maximum of 2GB per shipment. If the file is very large, you can opt for compression through systems like Zip, but remember that for your recipient to download it, they must also have the same compressor installed.
Once you have selected the files, you can view them in the dialog box. At this moment, you should click on the three dots you will see at the bottom left. A new menu will unfold showing the available sending methods. You must select one of the two to continue with the process.
- Sending via email: if you choose this method, you must enter the recipient’s email address. This will be the address to which the download link is sent. In the email your friend receives, they only need to press the download button, and the files will be available on their device.
- Via a link: if you decide to use this option, a link will be generated that you can send by any means you want: SMS, Whatsapp, etc. The recipient will receive it and must click on it. This will take them to the WeTransfer page, and from there they can easily download the files.
Once the sending method is selected, the files will begin uploading to the cloud. On your screen, an image will appear showing the upload percentage. The time will depend on your Internet connection speed and the weight of the files you are trying to share. It is very important that you do not close the browser or leave the page while the process lasts. When it is complete, the link will be generated if you chose this method, or two emails will be sent automatically, one to you informing you of the process and another to your recipient.
When the recipient receives the email or the link, they will have a few days to download it, which will be notified in the email they receive. Once they have downloaded the files, you will receive an email informing you, and within the stipulated period, the files will be permanently deleted from the cloud.
