Learn to live longer and better with the 10 keys to healthy aging from Jana Fernández, expert in wellness and rest

Healthy aging is not just about living more years, but living them with quality, autonomy, and well-being. With this vision, SPC has partnered with Jana Fernández, expert in well-being, rest, and longevity, to create the SPC Decalogue for Healthy Aging, a guide with ten simple habits that help you enjoy this vital stage to the fullest.

This decalogue is presented in the context of the 4th SPC Senior Week, taking place from September 29 to October 5, coinciding with the International Day of Older Persons (October 1). An event that invites rediscovering this vital stage with energy, autonomy, and confidence.

What does healthy aging mean?

Humanity has reached an extraordinary milestone: living longer. According to the WHO, by 2050, more than 22% of the world’s population will be over 60 years old. In Spain, nearly one-third of citizens will be over that age by 2030.

It’s not just about adding years, but about doing so with quality. To achieve this, it’s necessary to look beyond physical health. Mental well-being, cognitive agility, financial stability, and an adapted living environment are fundamental pillars. Additionally, technology plays a crucial role since there are devices that monitor health and digital tools that make daily life easier; innovation must serve every need.

The SPC Decalogue for Healthy Aging

These are the 10 key habits proposed by the guide created by Jana Fernández and SPC:

1. Move every day to live longer and better

It’s not about training like an athlete, but about incorporating movement into your routine. Walking 30 minutes, climbing stairs, doing strength exercises, or stretching improves mood, strengthens the heart, and gives the body flexibility. Moving is investing in quality of life.

2. Find your purpose

The reason to get up every morning is a vital driving force. It could be teaching, caring, learning, or creating. The size doesn’t matter, what matters is that it brings motivation and resilience. Purpose is the emotional fuel for this stage.

 3. Connect with those you care about

Social relationships are a key factor in longevity, even more than some medical indicators. Thanks to adapted technology, video calls, family chats, or sharing photos are now simple tools to reduce loneliness and strengthen bonds.

4. Choose technology that supports you

An accessible phone, with large text, visible buttons, and remote help options like the SPC Care app, doesn’t reduce independence but enhances it. Well-designed technology becomes an ally for living with security and confidence.

5. Make sleep your best ally

Sleeping between 7 and 8 hours strengthens defenses, improves memory, and regulates emotions. More than quantity, regularity matters since going to bed and waking up at the same time synchronizes our internal clock and improves rest.

6. Take care of what you eat

Following the Mediterranean diet — fruits, vegetables, legumes, fish, and EVOO — not only protects the heart but also cares for the brain. Keeping regular schedules and planning meals helps nourish the body and mind with the daily energy needed.

7. Train your brain

The brain also needs exercise. Learning a language, reading, playing an instrument, or solving logic games stimulates new neural connections. Today, even mobile apps offer courses and games that make mental training a fun habit.

8. Manage your finances, gain autonomy

Planning expenses and getting familiar with digital payments strengthens independence. The NFC technology of current smartphones simplifies processes like paying in stores or managing online banking securely.

9. Browse safely

Knowing how to identify fraud, use secure passwords, and understand online authentication opens doors to a calm and confident use of the Internet. Training in cybersecurity is key to enjoying leisure, culture, and tasks without fear.

10. Live with a positive attitude

Optimism, gratitude, and creativity are antidotes against the passage of time. Surrounding yourself with people who add energy and using technology to maintain hobbies, learn online, or connect with others multiplies vitality.

Because aging doesn't mean giving up, but activating superpowers that, with the right habits and technology serving people, allow you to live with more quality, more connection, and more fulfillment.
