One of the defining features of spring is that it is a very changeable season, which can bring us closer to summer and, within a few hours, also place us in winter-like temperatures. Because of this, our smartphones can have their performance affected. SPC, the Spanish technology company specialized in the development of consumer electronics products, outlines a series of guidelines to ensure our devices don’t suffer from these sudden temperature changes.
The arrival of spring, at the end of March, is not always synonymous with good weather, at least not throughout the entire day. It depends on many factors: climate change, annual trends, the climate of our region… What distinguishes spring is that it can be very changeable and, therefore, remind us of winter in the morning and summer by the end of the afternoon.
This situation of sudden temperature changes can affect the proper functioning of our smartphones, so we need to be very attentive to weather conditions to keep them in perfect condition.
In this regard, SPC, the Spanish technology company specialized in the development of consumer electronics products, offers a series of tips aimed at preserving the health of our smartphones so they work perfectly regardless of the outside temperature.
Protect it from cold and rain
Mobile phones do not handle extreme temperatures well. Despite the arrival of spring, there are areas and times of day when the cold is still dominant. When it comes to rain, it is also usually very present during this season. In both cases, the most affected parts are the battery and the screen. The battery, because its recommended operating range is usually between 10 and 30ºC, and the screen, because exposure to these adverse weather conditions can cause it to respond less effectively to our commands.
If we expect the outside temperature to be particularly low, or the rain to intensify, the best option is to use the phone hands-free, keeping it inside a case that isolates it from the outside or in a protected pocket. Of course, it is important to avoid charging it under these conditions, since the battery would suffer if its temperature falls below the recommended operating range.
Extreme humidity, whether on the screen or condensed inside the device’s case, can also cause malfunctions or system failures, so these situations should be avoided at all times.
Avoid heat and direct sunlight
Another major enemy of smartphones is, precisely, the opposite situation: heat. We should avoid leaving the phone exposed when temperatures reach very high levels. We should also try to avoid direct sunlight on our device, which can happen when placing it on a car dashboard or on an outdoor table, for example.
This situation can worsen if we use a case that is too thick, or one made of a material that prevents heat dissipation through the device’s metal casing. That is why it is advisable to have a thinner case in summer to avoid these situations.
Use it unplugged and close active apps
A smartphone while charging is, by definition, a source of heat that, combined with high ambient temperature and intensive use, can lead to system slowdowns. If we experience a hot spring, it is recommended to stop using the phone while charging and avoid having many apps open, as they consume system resources and speed up processes, increasing the device’s internal temperature.
Of course, a good mobile data connection, via 4G or WiFi networks, frees the device from constantly searching for better connectivity. If not, the search for better networks will drain the battery and increase its internal temperature.
Always keep it within its temperature threshold
If, for any reason, we have not managed to keep our smartphone operating at a normal temperature and notice it is hotter than usual, the best option is to turn it off for a few minutes, lower the screen brightness, or disable functions (such as Bluetooth) to allow it to cool down naturally. However, avoid a sudden temperature drop by placing it on a cold surface (like a refrigerator), since electronic devices handle sudden temperature changes poorly.
