For Grandparents' Day, help them overcome their fear of technology

This coming July 26th is a good date to help them find their motivation to enter the world of technologies, beyond the mobile phone. SPC, the Spanish technology company specialized in intelligent consumer electronics products, offers several applications with which the elderly can be more independent.

In 2020, seven out of ten older people (65-74 years) used the Internet; in 2009, only one, according to the Survey on equipment and use of information technologies by the National Statistics Institute (INE). The digital progress of the elderly has been clear: for them, ICTs are also the key to all matters related to access to leisure, products, and different services.

This greater handling of technologies by the elderly has mainly moved to the mobile phone. In 2009, the difference between the elderly and the rest of the age groups was 33 percentage points; in 2020, after the pandemic, the gap was reduced to 5 points, that is, practically nonexistent. If before they rejected having a mobile phone — due to its difficulty of use or their rejection of new technologies — now they are somewhat more receptive because of the circumstances: it makes them feel closer to their children and grandchildren through calls, messages, and photographs.

This coming July 26th, Grandparents' Day, is a good date to help them, with patience and affection, find their motivation to delve into the world of technologies, beyond the mobile phone. There are many devices that can help them maintain their autonomy and safety in their lives, such as home automation products.

So for those who have not yet ventured to be part of this world of technology, SPC, the Spanish technology company specialized in intelligent consumer electronics products, offers various applications with which the elderly can be more independent.

The mobile phone, essential to improve the quality of life of the elderly

It is important that the elderly can take advantage of the use of the mobile phone. Knowing how to master certain apps or functions allows them to have greater independence and a sense of self-competence, so necessary at all stages of life, but especially when reaching an age where adding quality is essential.

Currently, there is a large range of mobile phones, and also intelligent phones, for the elderly with features dedicated to those senior users who find it difficult to use an intelligent phone with advanced features, and who demand a device that is easy to use.

SPC has devices dedicated to those elderly users who, without yet being accustomed to the latest technologies, need a terminal that offers functional connectivity features and very intuitive use. They have been developed to offer easy handling: all these phones have large keys and numbers on the screen, amplified sound, charging base, and SOS button.

Keep the house clean without leaving the armchair

Household chores can be a great effort for older people, as they often experience joint pain, muscle pain, or difficulty moving. Everyday actions such as mopping the floor, dusting, or hanging clothes can be very difficult for them, also affecting their mental health as they feel limited.

Robot vacuum cleaners will be the perfect ally to keep the home clean while controlling their operation from the armchair. They can program the robot 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and choose, among other things, the suction power or the cleaning pattern the robot will follow, both from the mobile phone and by voice, greatly reducing movement.

Feeling safe at home

Although our elders live alone, it does not mean they are alone, since we can be close to them when they need it most, with IP surveillance cameras. In case of any accident and with a simple alert, you will be able to monitor the rooms where the camera is located easily and quickly, through a live video and audio signal via the Internet, so you will not have to go to their home to check that they are well. Many have built-in infrared vision that provides images 24 hours a day, both night and day, and two-way communication systems, so the user can interact with the person on the other side of the camera and hear their responses.

They will also be essential to keep the house safe from possible break-ins, even when going to spend a few days at the beach or visiting family.

Technology at the service of health

This pandemic has reminded us that health is the most important thing we have. That of our elders, somewhat more delicate, must be cared for with care. Exercise at these ages is essential and can be measured with different devices, such as intelligent watches that allow monitoring effort and outdoor activities thanks to the GPS function, which also allows saving favorite routes.

To carry out a more thorough healthy control at all levels, they can achieve it with intelligent scales. They offer numerous metrics, besides weight, such as: body mass index (BMI), body fat, water content, muscle rate, protein rate, basal metabolism, bone mass, fat volume, body weight, physical age, body type, and body score.
